Paphos Castle is located at the western end of the city port. It was originally a Byzantine fortress built to protect the port. The main fortress of the city was located in Saranta Kolones, about 600 metres west, and was destroyed by the earthquake of 1222. Saranta Kolones is a ruined medieval fortress inside the Paphos Archaeological Park, just north of the harbour of Paphos, on the island of Cyprus. It takes its name from the large number of granite columns that were found on the site and probably once formed part of the ancient agora. Saranta Kolones is situated 3½ km northwest of Sunset Point of Cyprus.

It is noted for the production of lokum, a confectionery commonly known as Turkish delight in English, and is the only place in the world with protected geographical indication for lokum.
