Together with the neighbouring isle of Frauenchiemsee and the uninhabited Krautinsel, it forms the municipality of Chiemsee, located about 60 kilometres southeast of Munich in the district of Rosenheim. Herrenchiemsee is situated 1 km southeast of Kloster Herrenchiemsee.
