The original mission was founded in 1817 as an asistencia of Mission San Francisco de Asís to serve as a hospital to treat sick and injured indigenous people, making it Alta California's first sanitarium. Mission San Rafael Arcangel is situated 1,800 feet northwest of San Rafael Downtown.
