The Unterberg is a prominent summit, 1,342 m above sea level high, in the Gutenstein Alps in southern Lower Austria. It is located about 10 km south of Hainfeld and is the westernmost and highest summit of a loose chain of mountains that include the Hocheck and the Kieneck.

The basic task of the observatory is monitoring relevant physical parameters that are of decisive importance for our understanding of processes on and below earth. Conrad-Observatory is situated 3 km northeast of Wurzelloch.
