Built to consolidate Paris's ancient stone quarries, they extend south from the Barrière d'Enfer former city gate. Catacombs of Paris is situated 700 metres east of La robe de Carat.

Constructed from 1969 to 1973, it was the tallest skyscraper in France until 2011, when it was surpassed by the 231-metre Tour First in the La Défense business district west of Paris's city limits.
