Sherborne Abbey

Sherborne Abbey, otherwise the Abbey Church of St. Mary the Virgin, is a Church of England church in Sherborne in the English county of Dorset. It was formerly a Saxon Catholic cathedral and a Benedictine abbey church, before becoming a Church of England parish church in 1539 during the dissolution of the monasteries. Sherborne Abbey is situated 1½ miles east of Silverlake.

Originally built by Sir Walter Raleigh as Sherborne Lodge, and extended in the 1620s, it stands in a 1,200-acre park which formed a small part of the 15,000-acre Digby estate. Sherborne Castle is situated 2½ miles east of Silverlake.
