The is the remote east side of the Sierra Nevada region of . The desert-like yearly rainfalls compete with small streams draining down from the snow-covered mountains to create a barren land with regions of verdant green.

is a popular vacation and recreation region straddling the border between and . The closest large city is . It is especially popular in the summer and winter.

is in the Sierra Nevada mountains of . It was originally the largest county in California at the time of statehood in 1850, but over the years was split up to form twelve other counties, giving it the nickname "the Mother of Counties".

is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the Sierra Nevada mountains in east-central . Approximately four million visitors each year come to Yosemite to marvel at its spectacular granite cliffs, towering waterfalls, remote wilderness, massive sequoia trees, and high mountain meadows.

is located in the sparsely populated east-central part of 's Sierra Nevada mountains. With only 1,200 residents it is California's least-populous county, leading the county's tourism board to advertise "Two people per square mile and you".
