It is primarily used for soccer, and rugby league as the home ground of the Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC in the A-League men's and women's competitions and the Melbourne Storm in the National Rugby League. Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is situated 370 metres north of Northern Lawn.

Anderson, it is notable as the first bridge in Victoria that was built using reinforced concrete. Morell Bridge is situated 170 metres northeast of Northern Lawn.
