As the 2003 Official Languages Act revoked the status of the English language name Ballydavid, the official name is Baile na nGall. Ballynagall is situated 2½ km east of Fort del Oro.

It is in the west of the Corca Dhuibhne peninsula and according to the 2002 census, about 75% of the town's population speak the Irish language on a daily basis. Ballyferriter is situated 3 km south of Fort del Oro.
