Round Lake, originally called Waawiyegamag or Wayagamug, drains into Crooked Lake and is thus hydrologically the highest point on the watershed that feeds the Inland Waterway. Round Lake is situated 2 miles southwest of The Shores.

Petoskey is about 12 miles southwest on US 31 and Mackinaw City and the Mackinac Bridge are about 25 miles north. Alanson is situated 4 miles northeast of The Shores.
