The first church of the name was built in 1847-49 by George Holley on land given for the purpose from the estate of General Peter Buell Porter; the funeral services of his son Col. It is an eight-story brick structure constructed in 1926 and is the city's sole example of a high rise, full service early 20th century apartment building designed for middle and upper income residents.
