The 54 ha park is based on the banks of the Waikato River and includes enclosed gardens, open lawns, a lake, a nursery, a convention centre and the Hamilton East Cemetery. Hamilton Gardens is situated 650 metres northwest of Peacockes Road Substation.

The Ministry of Works plaque at the southern end of the bridge says they designed it and it was opened on 29 June 1963. Cobham Bridge is situated 1 km northwest of Peacockes Road Substation.
