The station is named for the several Akademichesky Proyezd streets formerly located nearby, which were themselves named after the Russian Academy of Sciences but have all been renamed since. The museum was founded in 1907 by Alexander Kohts and was the world's first museum of evolution explaining the work of Charles Darwin as a causal explanation of nature.
