It opened on 6 December 1999 as part of Phase 2 of the system's expansion, next to The Anchorage skyscraper that was constructed in 1991, and near the terminus of Salford's old Dock 9. It lies chiefly to the south of the A57 road, close to the River Irwell, the main boundary with the city of Manchester, Salford Quays and Manchester Ship Canal, which divides it from Stretford.
