Mount Hiei is a mountain that lies to the northeast of Kyoto in the Sakamoto district of Otsu city. It is famed for the extensive temple complex near the summit.

The Eizan Cable, officially the Cable Line, is a funicular line in Sakyō, Kyōto, Japan, operated by Keifuku Electric Railroad. The line opened in 1925, as a western route to Enryaku-ji, a famous temple on Mount Hiei. Cable Hiei is situated 500 metres west of Hiei Mt. summit station.

Enryaku-ji is a Tendai monastery located on Mount Hiei in Ōtsu, overlooking Kyoto. It was first founded in 788 during the early Heian period by Saichō, also known as Dengyō Daishi, who introduced the Tendai sect of Mahayana Buddhism to Japan from China. Enryakuji Temple, Monjuro is situated 1½ km northeast of Hiei Mt. summit station.
