The mosque was built in 1618 in the city's castle, replacing the Church of Saint John, which was torn down after the failed anti-Ottoman revolt of 1611 led by Dionysius the Philosopher. Aslan Pasha Mosque is situated 370 metres north of Πλατεία Μίνωος Μάτσα.

The mosque was built in the city's inner castle immediately after the conquest by the Ottomans in 1430, near the ruins of an early 13th-century Byzantine church dedicated to the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. Fethiye Mosque is situated 390 metres east of Πλατεία Μίνωος Μάτσα.
