Following a medieval Georgian tradition of naming churches after specific places in the Holy Land, the Sioni Cathedral bears the name of Mount Zion at Jerusalem. Sioni Cathedral of the Dormition is situated 200 metres northwest of Vakhtang Gorgasali Square.
