It lies 2–3 km south of the Ridgeway and is protected as a Scheduled Ancient Monument. Alfred’s Castle is situated 2,800 feet west of Kingstone Down.

The barrow is believed to have been completed around 3430 BCE by pastoral communities shortly after the introduction of agriculture to the British Isles from continental Europe. Wayland’s Smithy is situated 2 miles north of Kingstone Down.
