Ur was an important Sumerian city-state in ancient Mesopotamia, located at the site of modern Tell el-Muqayyar in , southern . Although Ur was a coastal city near the mouth of the on the , the coastline has shifted and the city is now well inland, on the south bank of the , 16 km southwest of in modern-day Iraq. is situated 1½ km east of Lake Wyoming.
