It is the highest summit of a range which stretches eastwards from near the village of Carrog to the Horseshoe Pass traversed by the A542 road, and reaches an elevation of 577 metres above sea level. Formerly referred to as Llansanffraid-Glyn Dyfrdwy, as it lies within the parish of Llansanffraid Glyndyfrdwy, it takes its modern name from the Great Western Railway station on the opposite bank of the River Dee, which in turn took its name from the Carrog estate on that bank.
