Tecate is an unincorporated community in the Mountain Empire area of central southeastern San Diego County, California. It is adjacent to the Mexico–United States border and the Mexican city of Tecate in Baja California; it is affectionately nicknamed Tecatito on account of its smaller size compared with the Mexican city.

Tecate is a city of 73,000 people in Baja California on the border with California, about an hour east of Tijuana. Unlike most US/Mexico border crossings, there is no town on the US side.
