It was officially opened by Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Malacca Mohd Khalil Yaakob on 20 November 2014. Malaysia Prison Museum is situated 190 metres southwest of St. John’s Fort.

A Famosa was a Portuguese fortress built in Malacca, Malaysia, around 1512. The oldest part of the fortress was a five-storey keep which eventually gave its name to the fortress as a whole. A Famosa Fortress is situated 1½ km west of St. John’s Fort.
