Perched at an elevation of more than 1,433 metres, Sawfar lies adjacent to the main road that connects Beirut to Damascus. Sawfar is situated 3 km southeast of Deïr Mâr Yoûhanna.

The town has a population of nearly 11,000 inhabitants who are Druze. Ras el-Matn is situated 3½ km northwest of Deïr Mâr Yoûhanna.
