Kalambaka is a city of 11,500 people in the Thessaly region of central Greece, at the base of the Meteora monasteries. This is the hub of tourist services for the mystical clifftop refuges that loom above it.

The monastery-crowned pillars of Meteora are among the most striking geological and cultural gems of Greece. The formation consists of a number of steep and narrow rock pinnacles near the town of Kalambaka in northwestern Thessaly, topped with a total of 24 monasteries, 6 of which are still in use and open to visitors.
