The castle is situated on the western shore of Ballinskelligs Bay, on a narrow promontory which is subject to heavy erosion. Ballinskelligs Castle is situated 3½ km southeast of Killonecaha.

Ballinskelligs Abbey was an Augustinian priory. It is located on the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. The medieval priory, built in the 12 and 13th centuries, was established as a mainland priory for the monks of Skellig Michael who were abandoning the island due to adverse weather conditions. Ballinskelligs Priory is situated 3½ km southeast of Killonecaha.
