Construction at the site began in 1966, but the first launch did not occur until 1995 due to program cancellations and subsequent repurposing efforts. Vandenberg Space Launch Complex 6 is situated 2 miles southeast of Point Pedernales.

It was originally part of the California Spaceport and was known as the Commercial Launch Facility or Space Launch Facility.
