Waimea Canyon, on Kauai's West Side, is often described as “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” The moniker became popular after American explorer John Wesley Powell came to the island of Kauai in 1869, although it is often falsely attributed to Mark Twain, the author.

Waimea is a census-designated place in Kauaʻi County, Hawaiʻi, United States. Situated on the southwest coast of the island of Kauai, the population was 2,057 at the 2020 census. The first Europeans to reach Hawaii landed in Waimea in 1778. Waimea is situated 5 miles south of Keanapahu.
