Haleakalā

Haleakalā, or the East Maui Volcano, is a massive, active shield volcano that forms more than 75% of the of . The western 25% of the island is formed by another volcano, Mauna Kahalawai, also referred to as the .

The Haleakalā Observatory, also known as the Haleakalā High Altitude Observatory Site, is Hawaii's first astronomical research observatory. It is located on the island of and is owned by the Institute for Astronomy of the University of Hawaiʻi, which operates some of the facilities on the site and leases portions to other organizations. is situated 9 km west of Haleakalā.
