There has been a royal castle on the rock since the reign of Malcolm III in the 11th century, and the castle continued to be a royal residence until 1633. Edinburgh Castle is situated 3,200 feet northwest of Ibis Edinburgh Centre.

The Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre is a category B listed performing arts and lecture theatre located in the historic George Square in Edinburgh. Primarily operated as a lecture theatre for the University of Edinburgh, it is also used for general theatre performances, as well as being a designated Edinburgh Fringe Festival venue. Gordon Aikman Lecture Theatre is situated 350 feet northeast of Ibis Edinburgh Centre.
