It connects the famous resort town of St. Moritz in the Engadin valley with the Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo, which ends in the Italian town of Tirano in Valtellina. Bernina Pass is situated 7 km northeast of Piz Spinas.

Perched at 1,703 m on the hanging Plan da l'Alp terrace, it lies roughly 4.7 kilometres north-west of Poschiavo village but 700 metres higher, making the road distance 11 kilometres and the Bernina Line rail journey about 25 minutes. Cavaglia is situated 7 km east of Piz Spinas.
