Newry

Newry is a town straddling the boundary between County Down and County Armagh in Northern Ireland, five miles north of the border with the Republic of Ireland.
Bangor

Bangor is a town on the south shore of Belfast Lough, in County Down. It was a holiday resort from the mid-19th to the mid-20th century but is now chiefly a commuter town for Belfast. In 2021 it had a population of 64,000.
Downpatrick

Downpatrick is a town in County Down in Northern Ireland, now governed as part of Newry, Mourne and Down District. It's best known as the place where St Patrick supposedly returned to Ireland, and his burial place, and the area is dotted with prehistoric and early Christian sites.

Newtownards

Newtownards is a town at the head of Strangford Lough, historically in County Down, with a population in 2021 of 29,600. The counties of Northern Ireland are no longer units of governance so since 2015 the town has been part of Ards and North Down "super-district".
Mourne Mountains

The Mourne Mountains, usually just referred to as "The Mournes", are the highest peaks of Northern Ireland. They are dramatic and form the background to the south of County Down.
Holywood

Holywood is a town five miles northeast of Belfast. It's historically in County Down, but since 2015 has been governed as part of Ards and North Down District, along with Bangor and Newtownards.
Banbridge

Banbridge is a town in County Down in Northern Ireland, nowadays governed as part of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon District. It stands on the road between Belfast and Newry so it grew up as a rest stop for stagecoaches, and in the 19th century it was a major centre of the Irish linen industry.
Newcastle

Newcastle is a seaside resort in County Down in Northern Ireland. The "new castle" was probably already tumbledown when first documented in 1433 and even its successors are long gone.
Hillsborough

Hillsborough is a village historically in County Down in Northern Ireland, nowadays governed as part of Lisburn and Castlereagh District. It's an attractive Georgian village dominated by Hillsborough Castle, the official residence of the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, and of the King whenever he's in the province.
Strangford

Strangford is a village historically in County Down in Northern Ireland, now governed as part of Newry, Mourne and Down District. It's on the west bank of the narrow outlet of Strangford Lough, where the tides rip back and forth, hence to the Vikings it was Strangr-fjǫrðr, the strong fjord.
