Gauteng

Gauteng is one of the provinces in the northeast of . The word "Gauteng" is a Sesotho phrase meaning "Place of gold", referencing to the thriving gold industry following the 1886 discovery of gold in Johannesburg.

The is the urban western part of the Witwatersrand that is functionally merged with the conurbation. This area became settled by Europeans after a gold-bearing reef discovered in 1886 and sparked the gold rush that gave rise to the establishment of Johannesburg.
