Isle of Man

The Isle of Man is an island in the , sitting in the Irish Sea midway between Cumbria in England and County Down in Northern Ireland. It's not part of the United Kingdom but is a Crown Dependency: its own elected parliament, the Tynwald, governs island affairs, but matters such as defence and foreign affairs are governed by the UK.

is the capital city of the Isle of Man. It has the island's greatest concentration of visitor facilities along its promenade, so it's the main base for tourism. In 2021 had a population of almost 27,000.

is a fishing port in the south of the Isle of Man. For some 800 years it was the island's capital, but in the 19th century government functions moved away to Douglas.

is a port and beach resort on the northeast coast of the Isle of Man. It's about the island's closest point to England - Whitehaven is 36 miles northeast, so the port was historically important until Douglas developed.

is a small fishing port and beach resort on the west coast of the Isle of Man. Its main attraction is the castle, occupying an islet linked by road. In 2021 had a population of about 5700.

is an island off the southwest tip of the Isle of Man. It measures about one mile by one mile and is a wildlife reserve owned by Manx National Heritage. It has no permanent residents but in summer has a couple of bird wardens.

is a village on the southwest coast of the Isle of Man. Most tourists just day-trip, and it's a very quiet place in the evening.

is a small and very touristy village on the Isle of Man - its Great Wheel is an icon of the island. Laksaa in Manx means salmon, like the modern Scandinavian and German words, and the river descending steeply from Snaefell has a run of salmon.

is a village near the southwest tip of the Isle of Man. It has a small harbour for leisure and fishing craft, but the main reason to visit is to explore the peninsula beyond, which has a scenic hamlet, gaping chasms, megaliths and clifftop views.
