It is located in the west of Edinburgh on the main A71, in an area now known as Stenhouse, and, although never named as such, has commonly been known as Saughton Prison from the old name for the general area. HM Prison Edinburgh is situated 3,400 feet southeast of Saughton.

The station was opened on 9 May 1985 by ScotRail alongside new housing in the area, and is located on the Fife Circle Line, 4+1⁄2 miles west of Edinburgh Waverley. South Gyle railway station is situated 1 mile west of Saughton.
