Peñalara is the highest mountain peak in the mountain range of Guadarrama, a subsection of Spain's larger Sistema Central mountain chain which lies at the center and divides the Iberian Peninsula. Peñalara is situated 2½ km southwest of Hoyo Claveles.

Risco de los Claveles, is the second highest peak in the Sierra de Guadarrama. It is 2366 meters high, and is located in the northwest of Peñalara Natural Park, 700 meters north from Peñalara peak.
