The State Hospital is a psychiatric hospital located close to the villages of Carstairs and Carstairs Junction, in South Lanarkshire, Scotland. It provides care and treatment in conditions of high security for patients from Scotland and Northern Ireland. State Hospital is situated 2½ miles southeast of Shodshill Moss.

Carstairs is a village in Clydesdale, one of string of villages north bank of the upper River Clyde. Carstairs Junction grew up later when the railway arrived, while Carnwath is an old market town, population 1360.

Carstairs Junction is a village in South Lanarkshire. Taking its name from the village of Carstairs and nearby railway junction, the village grew around the railway station which opened in 1848. Carstairs Junction is situated 2½ miles southeast of Shodshill Moss.

Ravenstruther is a small hamlet in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, near the town of Lanark. In 1517 the lands of Carstairs and Ravenstruther were granted to William Sommerville. Ravenstruther is situated 2½ miles southwest of Shodshill Moss.
