Located about six miles south of Largs and about 2+1⁄2 miles northwest of West Kilbride on the Firth of Clyde coast. Hunterston B nuclear power station is situated 3,300 feet south of Hunterston Rock.

The ongoing decommissioning process is being managed by Nuclear Decommissioning Authority subsidiary Nuclear Restoration Services. Hunterston A nuclear power station is situated 3,800 feet south of Hunterston Rock.
