It was created in 1969 in order to host the French-speaking faculties of the Catholic University of Louvain, which had just seceded from the Dutch-speaking faculties of the Catholic University of Leuven, and had to move from Flanders to Wallonia.

Its name comes from the Gallo-Roman word castra "fortress, fortified camp", from the Latin castra which is the plural form of castrum meaning "entrenchment, fortified place". Chastre is situated 4½ km south of Serres Henricot.
