The Mosedale Viaduct carried the Cockermouth, Keswick and Penrith Railway over Mosedale Beck until its closure in 1972. Building work on the viaduct began in 1862, and the first test train crossed it in 1864.

Blencathra, also known as Saddleback, is one of the most northerly of the Cumbrian Mountains, in the English Lake District. It has six separate fell tops, of which the highest is the Hallsfell Top at 2,848 feet. Blencathra is situated 1½ miles northwest of Scogarth.
