Santa Croce is one of the six sestieri of , occupying the northwest part of the main islands. The district includes the Piazzale Roma, home to Venice's bus station and car parks, and around which is the only area of the city in which cars can travel.

The is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the in , Italy. Connecting the sestieri of and , it has been rebuilt several times since its first construction as a pontoon bridge in 1173, and is now a significant tourist attraction in the city.
