Yarmouth Castle is an artillery fort built by Henry VIII in 1547 to protect Yarmouth Harbour on the Isle of Wight from the threat of French attack. Just under 100 feet across, the square castle was initially equipped with 15 artillery guns and a garrison of 20 men. Yarmouth Castle is situated 2½ miles southeast of Butts Lagoon.

Hurst Spit is a one-mile-long shingle bank near the village of Keyhaven, at the western end of the Solent, on the south coast of England. The spit shelters an area of saltmarsh and mudflats known as Keyhaven and Pennington marshes. Hurst Spit is situated 1½ miles southwest of Butts Lagoon.
