Constructed from 1969 to 1973, it was the tallest skyscraper in France until 2011, when it was surpassed by the 231-metre Tour First in the La Défense business district west of Paris's city limits. Montparnasse Tower is situated 670 metres east of Place Jacques-et-Thérèse-Tréfouël.
