Olavshallen was built in 1989 as a concert hall and is named after a historical tradition in Trondheim, Norway, the St. Olav tradition. The foundation stone was laid by HM King Olav V 22 July 1988. Olavshallen Concert Hall is situated 140 metres southwest of Brattørparken.

The 0.485-square-kilometre island is located at the mouth of the river Nidelva just north of the city centre, west of Nyhavna, and south of Trondheimsfjord.
