The station was opened on 9 May 1985 by ScotRail alongside new housing in the area, and is located on the Fife Circle Line, 4+1⁄2 miles west of Edinburgh Waverley. South Gyle railway station is situated 2,700 feet southwest of Bank of Scotland.
