Mao is a city in Sahelian Chad, the capital of the Kanem Region and the Kanem Department. It is the 16th largest city in Chad, and is located 226 km north-northeast of N'Djamena. The city is ruled by the Sultan of Kanem, the chief of the Kanembou people.
