The sanctuary originated as a natural cave which was consecrated as a church at an unknown date, and local traditions link its establishment to antiquity or the medieval period. St Paul's Island is sometimes split into two islands by a shallow strait, and it is therefore sometimes referred to in the plural as St Paul's Islands.
