The city lies at the confluence of the Volga and the Kazanka rivers, covering an area of 425.3 square kilometres, with a population of over 1.3 million residents, and up to nearly 2 million residents in the greater metropolitan area.

The quarter stretches from northwest to southeast and is located between Lake Nizhniy Kaban and the Bolaq channel in the east, the southern intracity railway tracks in the west, the Central Market in the north and Vakhit Square in the south. Old Tatar Quarter is situated 2½ km south of The Palace of Agriculture of Republic Tatarstan.
