The tomb, constructed around 3000 BC, is a Orkney–Cromarty chambered cairn, characterized by stalled burial compartments. Blackhammer Chambered Cairn is situated 1,600 feet west of Irso (ruins).

Designed by David Bryce, the house was commissioned by Sir F W Traill-Burroughs as a new family home after his marriage to Eliza D’Oyly Geddes in 1870.
