Die antike Stadt oder Chersonesos, anfangs Herakleia, dann zur Abhebung von anderen gleichnamigen Siedlungen auch Taurische Chersonesos, in byzantinischer Zeit schließlich Cherson genannt, liegt am Südufer der größten der insgesamt 38 Buchten von Sewastopol, geschützt hinter einigen Hügeln, am äußersten Südwestzipfel der Halbinsel am .

Die in im Außen-Stadtbereich von Sewastopol wurde 1892 an jener Stelle eröffnet, an der sich der Legende nach Fürst Wladimir von der Kiewer Rus 900 Jahre zuvor zum orthodoxen Christentum bekannt haben soll.
