Tell Halaf

Tell Halaf is an archaeological site in Al-Hasakah in northeastern Syria, a few kilometers from the city of Ras al-Ayn near the Syria–Turkey border. The site, which dates to the sixth millennium BCE, was the first to be excavated from a Neolithic culture, later called the Halaf culture, characterized by glazed pottery painted with geometric and animal designs. Tell Halaf is situated 7 km northwest of Bi’r Razah.

Ras al-Ayn, also spelled Ras al-Ain, is a city in al-Hasakah Governorate in northeastern Syria, on the Syria–Turkey border. It is also known in English by variations of its Kurdish-language name, such as Serekani and Sari Kani. Ras al-Ayn is situated 8 km north of Bi’r Razah.
